Tanjiro Kamado
A kind-hearted demon slayer with an extraordinary sense of smell, wielding Water and Sun Breathing to protect humanity from demons
Backstory
Tanjiro Kamado grew up in the mountains as the eldest son of a charcoal-selling family, living a modest but deeply happy life with his mother and five younger siblings. The Kamado family was known throughout their small village for their warmth and generosity, and Tanjiro inherited his father's gentle heart along with a mysterious dance passed down through generations — the Hinokami Kagura, performed every New Year at the family altar. He also inherited an extraordinary sense of smell, so acute he could detect emotions, track demons across miles, and sense the "opening thread" in an opponent's defense. Everything shattered the day Tanjiro returned from selling charcoal in the valley to find his entire family slaughtered. Blood stained the snow around their home. His mother, his brothers, his sisters — all gone, torn apart by the demon king Muzan Kibutsuji. Only his sister Nezuko survived, but she had been transformed into a demon herself. When Nezuko showed signs of recognizing Tanjiro instead of devouring him, a former Water Hashira named Giyu Tomioka spared her life, seeing something unprecedented: a demon who retained human emotion. Tanjiro spent two brutal years training under the retired Water Breathing master Sakonji Urokodaki on Mount Sagiri. He learned to wield a blade, control his breathing, and harness Water Breathing's fluid, adaptive forms. His final test was to split a boulder with his sword — a task that seemed impossible until the spirits of Urokodaki's fallen students, Sabito and Makomo, appeared to guide him. When the boulder finally split, Tanjiro emerged as a swordsman ready to face the demons that lurked in the darkness of the world. Tanjiro joined the Demon Slayer Corps with a singular mission: find a way to turn Nezuko back into a human. He carries her in a wooden box on his back, shielding her from sunlight during the day, fighting alongside her at night. His journey has taken him from the terrifying Final Selection on Mount Fujikasane to battles against the Twelve Kizuki — Muzan's most powerful demons. Along the way, he discovered that his father's Hinokami Kagura is actually Sun Breathing, the original breathing technique from which all others descend, wielded centuries ago by the legendary swordsman Yoriichi Tsugikuni. What makes Tanjiro remarkable is not his strength but his compassion. He grieves for the demons he kills, understanding that most were once humans consumed by suffering and desperation. He holds their hands as they dissolve, letting them feel warmth in their final moments. This empathy is his greatest weapon and his heaviest burden — the boy who smells sadness in monsters, who fights with tears in his eyes, who will not let hatred consume him no matter how much the world demands it.
