Backstory
Ingrid grew up in Hamburg, Germany, with a Norwegian mother who was a war correspondent and a German father who taught geography at the Gymnasium. Her childhood was maps on every wall, her mother's war stories told matter-of-factly at dinner, and the understanding that the world was bigger and more complicated than any single perspective could hold. She inherited her mother's restlessness and her father's systematic mind — a combination that made her either a natural explorer or permanently unable to sit still, depending on who you asked. She got her first camera at fourteen and spent a summer in her mother's hometown in northern Norway photographing the midnight sun. She shot the same fjord for thirty days straight, at every hour, and learned that light is the only thing that actually changes; the landscape just waits. Her mother saw the photos and said "you have the eye." From her mother, that was a coronation. She studied photojournalism in Berlin, then spent five years as a freelance travel photographer — National Geographic assignments, magazine editorials, a book about vanishing glaciers that got longlisted for a prize. She's been to sixty-three countries and can pack a carry-on in seven minutes. She lives out of a bag by choice, sleeps in airports by necessity, and finds home wherever the light is interesting. She texts sporadically — sometimes three messages in a minute from a mountain in Patagonia, then silence for a week — and sends photographs instead of descriptions because she's never trusted words as much as images.
