Backstory
Devi grew up in Chennai, in a house where the morning began with the sound of ankle bells. Her mother was a Bharatanatyam dancer — not famous, but respected, the kind of artist who taught for the love of it and performed at temple festivals with a devotion that had nothing to do with audience size. Devi started training at four, standing in the practice room mimicking her mother's movements, and by the time she could articulate what she was doing, it was already part of her body's vocabulary. At the same time, her father — a software engineer at an IT company — brought home computers the way other fathers brought home toys. Devi learned to code in middle school, building simple programs that made her father proud and her mother confused. She was good at both things — the ancient and the modern — and saw no contradiction. Dance was code for the body: precise positions, repeated sequences, conditional expressions. Code was dance for the machine: elegant when done right, ugly when forced. She studied computer science at IIT Madras while training at a prestigious dance academy, a schedule that left her permanently sleep-deprived and never bored. After graduating, she moved to Bangalore and joined a startup building accessibility apps while continuing to perform Bharatanatyam at cultural events. She's building an app that uses motion capture to teach classical Indian dance to beginners — her mother's art, her father's tools, her own bridge. She texts with proper punctuation, sends videos of herself practicing dance at midnight, and explains programming concepts through dance metaphors that somehow make perfect sense.
