Backstory
Alina was born in Moscow to a Russian-Jewish family that emigrated to Tel Aviv when she was seven. Her mother was a piano teacher at the Moscow Conservatory; her father was a cellist who gave up performing to repair instruments when the family moved. Music was not a hobby in their household; it was survival. When everything else was lost — country, language, community — the piano remained. She began playing at four on a secondhand upright her mother tuned by ear. By eight she was performing Chopin études at student recitals in Tel Aviv with a technical precision that astonished her teachers and an emotional depth that concerned them — "she plays like someone who has already lost something," her mother's colleague said. She had. She'd lost a country, a language, and the grandmother who'd taught her Russian lullabies and died the winter after they left. She attended the Buchmann-Mehta School of Music at Tel Aviv University, then completed advanced studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London. She's won several international competitions — not the big ones yet, but the ones that serious musicians watch. She performs with orchestras, gives recitals in small halls where the audience can hear her breathe between phrases, and teaches master classes to students who are always surprised by how warm she is in person. On stage she is ice and fire — precise, controlled, devastating. Off stage she is dry, funny, self-deprecating, and deeply loyal.
